Katharine Dufault is a New York Times-reviewed artist and curator. She graduated with honors from Columbia University with a degree in painting and literature after studying visual arts, graphic design, and photography at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, England.

As a multi-media artist, Dufault’s practice includes working in oils, watercolor, encaustic, printmaking, and photography. Each medium imposes its own set of limitations, both challenging and exciting her practice. Dufault has stated, “Painting is a meditation and a kind of alchemy in which I concentrate and transform my feelings and memories into something material that can be experienced in various ways by others. I draw on my deep love of nature: the impressions from my rural life in the Berkshires, earlier years in Westchester, and my childhood in the Cambridgeshire countryside in England.” Her work is a dance between the intense and the subtle, the strong and the fragile, and between control and spontaneity, recorded in thick and delicate brush strokes and wiped and poured paint, resulting in areas of opacity and translucence, and places in which the pigment has been allowed to bleed or drip down the canvas. “I want to create paintings which are both familiar yet unknown, and I hope the work attracts the viewer with beauty and simultaneously prompts curiosity.”

Dufault regularly exhibits her work and has participated in numerous shows throughout New York State, including New York City, Brooklyn, Hudson, and Westchester County; Connecticut; Massachusetts, including Boston and Berkshire County; Ohio; and Cambridge, England. Dufault’s work is included in many corporate and private collections, such as Brian Murphy Interior Design, Cove Leigh Club in Rye, NY, Dearborn Design Studio in Westchester, NY, Matthew Yee Interiors in NY, and Westchester Medical Center in Westchester, NY, among others.

Dufault has advised non-profit gallery boards, sat on visual arts panels, and served as a juror for several awards. She recently joined the board of Millay Arts Residency based in Austetlitz, NY, in September, 2023.

Dufault lives and works in Southern Berkshire County, MA.
